Show up Early. and Put in the Work
Read the room. If people stay late then maybe they need some assistance finishing a project. Ask if they need help with anything before you go home. Especially if you are always the first to go home and the last one in the office. You don’t just interview and get the job and call it a day. You need to put in the work and earn the job title you interviewed for and possibly a promotion you want to work towards.
Be Kind
Being kind will take you far at work. We aren’t saying that you should be a push over however keeping your calm and training your coworkers on tasks you are more skilled at will not only take work off of your plate but also make you a more popular employee in the office.
Have a Good Attitude
No one likes the toxic coworker. Having a good attitude despite the ups and down climate in the office will not only make you a more favorable employee but it will also help you enjoy going to work more as well. Word of advice is to just not get involved in the gossip and toxic conversations at work. I like to remind myself why I wanted the job in the first place and that usually brings me back to my core values.
Earn Respect
It’s so easy to get frustrated when you first start your job and want the same respect you had from employees at the last company you worked at. It’s important to show your hard work, ethics, and skills to earn the respect of other employees and coworkers. It is important to remember that you need to earn respect but also make sure people are aware that you are not a push over either. Demand respect but in a kind way. The best way to do this is work on the confidence you exude in the office, respect others, and show your dedication to work. You will earn respect in no time.
Participate
This one is controversial. Personally, I think it’s important to find something, anything, to participate in at work. Whether there is a culture committee or volunteer event, it’s important to show that you are not just there to work your hours and then leave. Creating connections at work will not only help you in the future on projects with said coworkers but also create opportunities for you within the company as well! It’s also a easy goal to check off on your year end reviews.
We use these tips to make sure we are enjoying our careers. It’s so easy to get caught up and create negative energy when the climate at work gets stressful. By keeping your energy positive, working hard and participating in something important to you through the company you can keep your head up and not turn into a toxic employee that could sabotage your career.
